Inside Man

****½

A superior film. Lee makes this homage to the dime novel and crime story one of 06’s best movies so far. It loses some points for sacrificing Story for a political point, or more accurately, a political pointing out-- that one of our nation’s largest banks was founded on the profits of Nazi Germany’s Holocaust. I guess though if he wanted to be heavy handed about it, he would have based the movie on a certain political family’s fortune being founded the same way, but it’s clear Inside was merely a vehicle for making this point. While film shouldn’t be restricted from making a point, I think it’s a legit criticism to say that it should be seamlessly woven into Story, and for me this was the skipping needle in an otherwise beautiful jazz album. Slight flaw aside, this film gets a very high recommendation.
