The Good Shepherd

***½

Excellent idea, and story make this a good movie. Miscast actors and a complicated manner of storytelling keep it from being great, though. Such great subject matter (long overdue for a thoughtful, if not ambitious storyline) is something DeNiro should be applauded for. Casting Laura Croft as the dutiful and negelected wife, however, is something Cheech should give him a little "ride" over ( What, no Bullets over Broadway fans in the house? ). On a like note Mr. Ripley too was a little off, but this might have been the fault of makeup department as he perpetually looked younger than his son. Which brings us to the most egregious miscasting of all-- the son. No way and in hell is the offspring of Croft and Ripley going to be that butt ugly or stringy. Anyway all these were huge distractions in trying to follow the plot, which I can see, and actually saw, confuse people to the point of slumber. But for those of you who weather the storm of jumping time periods the story should still carry the movie. Recommended.
