The Lives of Others **** A moving and complicated movie set in a divided Berlin, during the height of the cold war. Truly, I expected something much more creepy, some type of voyeurism parade on ice, but the movie surprised me and turned away from sensationalizing its focus. Instead it's a very intimate movie, more about the people doing the listening than those being listened in on. And there is a larger canvas here, that of the soul, the state of Germany, redemption, and that which can not be killed or suppressed-- well ultimately. ... In short this is about change, and the promise and hope change can inspire. Very good. |
